The Yankee Dental Congress 2016…view from an exhibitor

Yes, it’s as tiring as it appears! Being “on” for 3 days, both during the day and at morning and evening events is exhausting. Tired feet are a given as is the tedium of setting up and breaking down the booth. The planning begins long before January…informational materials, giveaways, contests and most important what type of candy should we make available!

With all that being said, it is our town, our dental community and the place we want to be to represent the services we provide. Sure, we spend a lot of time visiting with practices, both current and past, but we love the connections we make and look forward to that the most…even though it can be hard to recognize some of the team members without their scrubs on. This was my first year as a speaker at the show. I have found my comfort zone with public speaking and am so appreciative of the opportunity it gives me to meet new dentists and staff.

We do try to break away from the booth to walk the floor. I have some interesting observations to share about the exhibitors this year…

There were many more “corporate” dental practices represented then I remember in past years. This is a hot topic today with more and more offices asking about these models. As things are ever changing in dentistry this is certainly one of the models that are becoming more and more real. Practices that are formulating their exit strategy will now have to look at this type of buyer. It is not necessarily good or bad, just different and a model that deserves to be fully explored as an option for transition and for employment of providers and staff.

There were also many more “marketing” companies on the floor. Every practice is looking for the best and most creative way to get new patients. Dependence on PPO’s to bring in new patients is often difficult and other ways to attract new patients are less obvious than in the past. Many of these companies have unique and creative marketing options but they come with a cost. As we always advise, make sure you take your time and fully understand what you get for your investment and how you can track results. Promises are just that…

So now that the memory of Yankee 2016 is fading along with our sore feet and tired voices I’m guessing you’ll see us back again next year….
